April Block - LouAnne

Catching up here - have finished my April block. Features include 2 JBM fabrics which are the center and lower left patches.
Other:
>upper left: In our iris gardens the earliest blooms began in April which delighted the hummers who arrived home and began draining the feeders almost daily.

>Lower left is in honor oof my 66th (egads!) birthday.
>Upper right is for my dh's garden which he planted in April and which will soon be showering us with all kinds of squash and tomatoes.
>Lower right is because Mabel our maple tree performed her annual Helicopter/Twirly shower in April which delighted our girls as similar showers did us when we were small. I can't say the local cats were as delighted! Twirly was tinted with green watercolor pencil.
>Center spider web is made of copper metallic sewing thread with Mr. Spider being made of one strand of brown cotton floss.

Is that center camoflaged enough to keep you from seeing that I cut the center patch on a slant?

still there

Just to let the group and Sharon know that I am still there. I am currently doing 2 projects but finding the time to complete with the irregular hours of my job, is a challenge in itself. Hopefully that will be resolving itself in the next week and I will so have these done to show.

May, Ati

I see myself as a craft-worker. By accident I create sometimes something what could be art, but I don't look at myself that way. I am a craft-worker and that is what I can.
The May colors are very feminine and while working on this piece , also on mothers-day, I would like to dedicate this page to all mothers.
The lace in the upper corner is one of my first bobbin-lace pieces I made, I have cut it in half now to emphasis the feminine look.
On the back is a sort of poem, a free translation:
Mothers-day.
Everything you really love
will always give warmth,
also when it is gone.
It 'll always be a part of you,
a piece of your life.

April - "Seasons" - Meg in Albuquerque

This piece is 14.5 x 17.5 and is a mixed media piece. The background fabric is hand painted. The snow on the right branch is the plastic snow that is used at Christmas for snow on Mini villages or scenes. It is glued down and then covered with white tulle. The snow flakes under the tree are snowflake charms. The flowers and grass on the bottom are free motioned as are the lines on the tree trunk. This was a tough challenge this month, and if I hadn't made the commitment to finish each months project, I would have stopped about 3/4ths of the way.

More detail is available on my blog at:

I have also blogged my thoughts on the May challenge. I can't wait to start on this one.

April- Hope- Tyanne

Here is my challenge piece for April. It just needs to be quilted, which will happen when I have more time. It is paper pieced, using the freezer paper method, hand appliqued with beaded accents. You can read more of my thoughts on this piece on my blog http://www.tyquilts.com

May - I Yam What I Yam *; Paula Hewitt

* with apologies to Popeye.

I wrote here my feelings on the topic, but to reiterate my main points:

I wonder why we need labels, and to label what we do…..I call myself neither artist nor craftsperson…. I call myself Mama, ‘lovely wife’ (but that doesn’t fool Matt for a second), ‘devoted daughter’ (doesn’t fool mum either), but usually I just call myself Paula, because that’s who I am…….

Dimensions: 12.5 by 11.5 inches
Materials: photo transfer, commercial fabrics
Method: hand pieced, machine quilted

What I learned: This was my first attempt at photo transfer onto cloth, with limited success. I used photo transfer paper and ironed it onto white homespun. I don’t like the plastic feel of the cloth, but didn’t find it difficult to stitch through – by hand or machine. Unfortunately I didn’t read the instructions properly and tried to iron it afterwards and sort of melted the image a little. One of the reasons I used photo transfer for this project is that I want to experiment with techniques before I make a memory book, of family photos.

Crartistic Liscence: I know these aren’t yams – they are kumera, or sweet potatoes…..but I use what I have!

I am the poo
I originally thought I would draw and embroider yams, however my drawing skills are shaky at best, and I was afraid the finished product might look like dog poo. I thought the realism of a photo would be better…..heaven forbid I want to be known as the TIF participant that defines herself as a poo. :)

Take It Further - May

I had a hard time this month, deciding how to illustrate my thoughts on May's theme. I could put it into words, but how to put it onto a crazy quilt block???
But here is my finished piece - my blog describes how it relates to the theme of artist/crafter/whatever.

May Bluebird - Robin

This may palette for the may challenge, continuing of my bird obsession. This is made from vintage tages, snaps ribbon and scrapbook paper. It is mostly glues, with a bit of sewing.
